First F.A.N.S. community training slated for Fall 2011

via http://www.vvsd.org/news/index.php?id=1709

Community members who want to volunteer their time as Friends, Families and Neighbors Supporting Students (F.A.N.S.) at Bolingbrook or Romeoville high schools or at all five Valley View School District 365U middle schools must attend one of several scheduled training sessions, the first of which will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The nationally-recognized F.A.N.S. program is designed to allow local residents and students the opportunity to interact during high hallway traffic times before school, during lunch periods and after school.

VVSD officials are hopeful that new F.A.N.S. will join the nearly 100 F.A.N.S. who have been part of F.A.N.S. since the program was launched two years ago at BHS. RHS F.A.N.S. began last year, as did small F.A.N.S. programs in the middle schools.

All training sessions will be held at the VVSD Administration Center, 755 Dalhart Avenue, Romeoville. In addition to training, information will be passed out regarding state-required fingerprinting and background checks.

     Other planned training sessions include:
     Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to noon

     Nov. 16, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

     Jan. 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

     Feb. 18, 10 a.m. to noon

     March 21, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

     April 21, 10 a.m. to noon

More information and reservations are available by calling Michele Bochnak at 815-886-2700 or by e-mailing her at BochnakML@vvsd.org.

Who We Are (Download BAAWG Brochure Here)

Building Academic Achievement Within this Generation (BAAWG) is a grassroots organization that has assembled to promote and facilitate community involvement centered on issues of academic achievement. Community action teams were launched for the purpose of conducting activities to enrich the education experience for all Bolingbrook and Romeoville, IL students.

Research has shown that students are most successful in places where the“community is in the schools” rather than just where the “school is in the community.” This means that citizens willing to become involved can make a significant impact on improving our children’s educational experience.

Vision

Community and schools working together to assure an equitable learning experience in a worldclass school for every student in Bolingbrook and Romeoville public schools.

Mission

The mission of Building Academic Achievement Within this Generation (BAAWG) is to enhance and improve the educational experiences provided to students in Bolingbrook and Romeoville public schools and to eliminate the academic achievement gap.

We accomplish this mission through

Community engagement designed to create community ownership of  public education

Parent/guardian education designed to focus on parental ownership of  children’s educational experience

Collaboration with the schools and other organizational, business and  individual stakeholders

Programming for students and families

Promoting volunteerism, among students and adults,  for educational  purposes

Research and the public sharing of research finding regarding the educational environment of our children

Promoting a public awareness of and involvement in current issues  facing school district policymakers

We have a commitment to

Developing a climate where community deliberation on issues of education can flourish
